Originaire d'Amos, sur les rives de l'Harricana, dans la region de l'Abitibi, au Canada, André Lavoye s'intéresse tôt aux sciences et étudie l'aéronautique avant de commencer sa carriere de luthier à Montréal au tout début des années 80. Grâce à une bourse du Conseil des Arts du Canada, il part poursuivre sa formation ettravaille d`es 1988 à Paris dans l'atelier de Serge et Frédéric Boyer. De là, il rencontre Jean-François Raffin, chez qui il apprendra le métier d'archetier au début des années 90. Il continue toutefois de travailler comme luthier dans certains ateliers parisiens comme celui de Jérôme Dariel. Plus tard, il travaille `a Hong Kong chez Sandra Wagstaff et `a Bruxelles pour la Maison Bernard aux côtés de Jan Strick.
De retour au Canada en 1994 il enseigne à l"école de lutherie de Québec avant de s'installer à Montréal et travaille depuis comme luthier et archetier pour l'atelier Wilder& Davis Luthier. Vers 1999 il ouvre également son atelier personnel, dédié `a la production de violons, d'altos et d'archets.

Born in the Abitibi region of Quebec, Canada, André Lavoye studied in aeronautic before beginning his carrer as a luthier in Montreal in the beginning of 80. Later, with a Grant of the Canada Concil for the Arts he pursued his training and from 1988 he worked in Paris in the workshop of Serge and Frederic Boyer. There, He met Jean-François Raffin from whom he learned the trade of bow-making in the early 1990. He continiued working as a luthier in various parisian workshops, including that of Jérôme Dariel. He later worked in Hong Kong with Sandra Wagstaff and in Brussels for La Maison Bernard alongside Jan Strick.
Back in Canada in 1994 he brievely taught at The violin-making school of Quebec before settle In Montreal. Since, he is working as luthier and archetier for Wilder & Davis Luthier. In 1999 he also opened his own workshop where he produce violins, violas and bows.
